Well, to say that “we had fun this summer” would be a HUGE understatement. After the great first half of summer, it was hard for the campers imagine that it could get much better…boy, were they in for a surprise!
Week 5 was our first week back from the 4th of July break, so a lot of our campers were still in ‘vacation mode’, so we knew we had to jump start camp right away. What better way to do that then a high-octane field trip to Andretti’s. The kids had a blast riding go-karts, climbing the rock wall, doing the confidence course, and unlimited gaming. Many of the kids listed this field trip in their TOP 3 for the summer!
In Week 6, we met with Mr. Tony Narcisse and the Georgia Kayaking and Fishing Club at Lake Lanier. The campers did just what the club implies: they fished and kayaked. The services were donated by Mr. Narcisse and the food was completely donated by Publix. We also made our way to a matinee’ movie and a tour of the CNN Center in Atlanta.
In Week 7, we traveled back to HOT-lanta, this time to the World of Coke! This was probably one of the coolest trips we took this summer; so informative and yet so funny as we watched the kids try all the different flavors of Coke from around the world! The faces they made were downright hysterical at times. This week, Lauren Andrew’s team won the Great Puzzle Race and won a trip to Six Flags Atlanta! We had a blast!
Week 8, our last week of camp, found ourselves in ‘wind-down mode’….or were we? Actually, we started the week off with a pizza party and a trip to Q-Zar for some laser tag. On Tuesday, we went ice skating again at the Cooler, then on Wednesday we trekked to Lake Lanier Islands Waterpark for our summer-end blow out field trip!
Overall, we had a phenomenal summer having over 70 campers throughout the summer! In 8 weeks, we went on 14 field trips and every single one of them was great! Let me reiterate that NONE of this could have been possible without the overwhelming support from our community, specifically Sawnee EMC and the Clorox Foundation, who provided summer camp grants of $4,000 and $1,250 respectively.
We anxiously look forward to next summer….we set the bar high, so it may be difficult to top the Summer of ‘09. Come to think of it, we said that about the Summer of ‘08, too!
