Summer Camp – 1st Month Review

Summer Camp – 1st Month Review

Well the first month of Summer Camp is in the books, and so far so good! After a brief introductory period of the kids getting to meet their counselors and reuniting with their friends from school, the first week of camp kicked off.  We started with an interesting trip to Cagle’s Dairy Farm in Canton.  We took a hay-ride tour of the huge dairy farm, fed some baby calves, learned how to milk a cow, and watched the well-trained cattle dog (”Tip”) round up the herd.  But before we left, we saw first hand how milk is processed and even got to taste a sample!

The second week was rather interesting as well as we journeyed up to Helen, GA for some Cool River Tubing down the Chattahoochee.  This was arguably the best field trip of the summer!  Most of the kids had never been tubing before, and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

In week 3, we brought back the “Mall Photo Scavenger Hunt”, back by popular demand (the kids loved it last year!)  After all the scores were tallied, it was reeeeeaally close, but in the end Lauren Cullen’s team eeked out the victory.  As a reward for their hard work, the team (Osby, Afom, Quadri, DeDSC01848vin, Rustin, and Angie) were treated to lunch at Zaxby’s.

In the last week before the 4th of July break, our oldest group of kids (13 & 14 year olds) got the opportunity to learn how to ride dirt bikes, courtesy of Ms. April Zoby and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (located at the Honda Rider Education Center).

Sprinkled in throughout these amazing and unique activities, the PAL kids also participated in the Alpharetta Community garden project, went ice skating, bowling, had water balloon fights, played dodgeball, basketball, & kickball.  Oh, did I fail to mention that the went through the Alpharetta Fire Department’s smokehouse simulator?  They also rocked out in a Xbox 360 Rock Band concert tournament, enjoyed a cookout, and let’s not forget every Tuesday and Thurday at the pool!  Be sure to check out ALL of the photos from these good times!

We’re definitely looking forward to the second half of the summer.  All of this could not have been possible without the support of our community friends, in particular Sawnee EMC and the Clorox Foundation who donated $4,000 and $1,250 respectively.
