PAL Mentoring Program
The primary purpose of the Mentoring Program is to provide access to strong leaders (students and professionals) who are able to develop personal mentoring relationships that will encourage and empower students to make good choices. The goal is to leave a mark on the future by improving the high school graduation rate of North Fulton students through increased school attendance, academic achievement, and positive student behavior.
Mentoring is held Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 7:30pm during the school year.
An essential part of all of our programs is mentoring. The Police Athletic League was formed initially in 1917 by a New York police officer as a way to mentor kids hanging out in the streets and causing problems. These concepts were adopted by Alpharetta PAL in 1996 and we continue to be a safe haven to local kids and provide quality role models and mentoring.
The Alpharetta PAL program continues to seek and provide programs offering mentoring opportunities using the concept of Leaders Building Leaders. Last year, Leadership North Fulton adopted Alpharetta PAL and helped us create a formal, one on one, mentoring program in cooperation with Crossroads North Second Chance School.
The initial group of 15 kids met every Wednesday for three months. There were field trips, inspirational speakers, and community service projects designed to enhance the self esteem of these great kids. The mentors and the kids all agreed it was a resounding success.
We have continued this program into 2008. Fourteen incredible kids meet every Wednesday night for two hours with their mentors. We are planning two community service projects for the first half of 2008. The kids will be choosing their projects and will be involved in every aspect of the planning and operations of their service to the community.
